Behind Adobe Walls: The Hidden Homes and Gardens of Santa Fe and Taos by Lisl Dennis (Photographer), Landt Dennis Once upon a time these New Mexico towns were rough-and-tumble settlements peopled by drifters and dreamers. Sante Fe and Taos are still very much a cultural rendezvous, but far removed from their humble beginnings; Sante Fe has lately become known as the Beverly Hills of the Southwestern U.S. Among its full-time residents are the Dennises, the husband and wife author-photographer team who host this tour of their neighbors' private homes. The owners and designers weigh in with their own words about creating these eclectic sanctuaries, making it a very personal tour.

Nuevo México Profundo: Rituals of an Indo-Hispano Homeland by Miguel A. Gandert (Photographer), Enrique Lamadrid, Lucy R. Lippard, Chris Wilson, Miguel Grandert (Photographer), Helen R. Lucero, Ramon A. GutierrezIn this book, award-winning photographer Miguel Gandert records the sacred rituals and dances of the mestizo peoples of the upper Río Grande in 130 exquisite black-and-white photographs. Included are images of the two great Indo-Hispano regional traditions, the Matachines conquest dance drama, complete with monsters and bull, and the multifaceted Comanches celebration, with its equestrian victory play and boisterous dances. The image and story of Our Lady of Guadalupe are in evidence everywhere in a sacred landscape crisscrossed with procession and pilgrimage. Four essays provide the background for viewing Gandert's work. Enrique R. Lamadrid presents the folkloric context for the rituals and dances, tracing the mixture of Indian and Hispanic elements in the public celebrations performed today in towns and villages all along the Río Grande. Ramón A. Gutiérrez examines how the Río Grande culture traveled up and down the river, defying international borders. Lucy R. Lippard discusses the social relations among participants in Gandert's photographs-the subjects, the viewers, and the photographer himself. Chris Wilson provides biographical information on Gandert and traces the development of his aesthetic.

The New Mexico Experience: 1598-1998: The Confluence of Cultures by Richard E. Peck, Dayton Molzen & Landmark Photography (Photographer) In 1598, twenty-two years before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, Don Juan de Oate led a group of Spanish explorers to the banks of the Rio Grande near what is today the town of Espaola and established a permanent settlement north of Mexico. 400 years later, Richard Peck traces the great sweep of history from the Anasasi civilization to todays Land of Enchantmenta compelling and wonderful trip. Chapters touch all aspects of a tumultuous past, from the pre-Columbian era and the Pueblo peoples to the explorers and missionaries, from the territorial days of outlaws, cowboys, and capitalists, to the nuclear scientists at Los Alamos and the high technology of Albuquerques Silicon Mesa. But The New Mexico Experience is not a history, the author says. Its really a sampling of stories Ive heard, and read, and recall; the glimpses of landscapes and people who define in unique ways the New Mexico I call home. Its certainly not everyones New Mexico, he writes in the introduction, but it is someones New Mexico. I hope it resembles yours.
