Chased By The Light
by Jim Brandenburg (Photographer)

Award-winning nature photographer Jim Brandenburg gave himself a challenge: for 90 days between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice, he would take only one photograph each day. This volume is the result of that project. Through the accompanying essay Brandenburg shares his innermost thoughts and passions as he witnesses the cycle of nature near his home in the northwoods of Minnesota. In this paperback edition Brandenburg contributes new photographs and an epilogue that illustrates and discusses the devastating summer wind storm that wreaked havoc on the locations photographed for the original project.

Only in Minnesota
by Berit Thorkelson, Roxanne Kjarum (Photographer)

"Only in Minnesota" is a pictorial tribute to all that makes the state unique. A combination of the natural, historical, and cultural facets of life in Minnesota, it showcases the people and what they do for fun (the Uptown Art Fair, ice fishing), where they live (the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, and Rochester to smaller towns and rural regions in between), their favorite places (Mille Lacs, Split Rock Lighthouse), and more.

More than 160 dazzling, four-color photographs-showing a variety of subjects, from farms and churches to tourist destinations and state parks; from nature scenes to city festivals and cultural events-are the focus of "Only in Minnesota". These photographs are accented by lively, captions and fun facts. The result is a homage to the Gopher State from a local author and photographer whose love for Minnesota comes through on every page.

Voices for the Land: Minnesotans Write About the Places They Love
by Brian Peterson (Editor), 1000 Friends of Minnesota (Contributor), Paul Gruchow

"A place is not a thing," writes Paul Gruchow in the foreword to VOICES FOR THE LAND, "it is a relationship. A location becomes a place only in the context of time, of history." In this extraordinary tribute to the importance of the ordinary places in our lives, fifty-two Minnesotans write about the special, sometimes secret, places that give their lives meaning. For some it is their home or cabin or lake. For others, it's a family farm or neighborhood park, a backyard garden or north woods trail: all places where we find a personal and spiritual connection to the land.

VOICES FOR THE LAND explores this complex relationship by linking these personal essays with striking images captured by award-winning photographer Brian Peterson. This marriage of words, images, and landscape provides a powerful reminder of our deep and abiding connection to the land. The writers share the experience of these favorite places through their senses, from the aching tingle of a cold winter night and the sound of ice "singing" to the buzz of mosquitoes and the acrid smell of burning peat.

In Search of Lake Wobegon
by Garrison Keillor, Richard Olsenius (Photographer)

In the twenty-five years since Garrison Keillor first brought it to life, the rural Minnesota town of Lake Wobegon has become a national treasure. In this lavishly produced photography book, word and image combine to illuminate the real Minnesota town-life, landscapes, and people who inspired its creation.

Taking us on a tour of Stearns County, the Minnesota county he deems most "Wobegonic," Keillor meditates on the origins of the place where, as a young writer, he found the inspiration for his fiction and his radio show. As an artful evocation of Keillor's beloved invention, Richard Olsenius's elegantly composed black-and-white photographs of rural Minnesota capture the dignity of his subjects, the beauties of the landscape as well as the enduring values and eccentricities of the communities rooted there. Photographs of the high school homecoming court, the tidy, austere working farm, the cozy villages, and summer barbecue at the lake are a visual feast for Lake Wobegon devotees as well as a moving tribute for anyone who feels the emotional claim of rural America. A unique collaboration featuring more than eighty photographs reproduced in duotone with extended captions written by Keillor, In Search of Lake Wobegon is a beautifully produced work for the millions of radio listeners and book lovers who want to visit Wobegon again and again.

Looking for the Summer
by Jim Brandenburg (Photographer)

World-renowned photographer Jim Brandenburg once again uses the hidden world of his beloved northern woods as the setting for a daunting artistic challenge. From June 21st to September 21st, Jim spent each day capturing the spirit of the Northern Minnesota wilderness through his camera. The resulting book literally teems with life. It is filled with the color and action of a pristine natural world during its most energetic season of the year. It features all of Brandenburg's favorite subjects: wildlife and wildflowers, water and wide-open skies. As always, Jim brings the photojournalist's instinct for the critical moment to each photo. Testaments in Wood: Finnish Log Structures at Embarrass, Minnesota
by Wayne Gudmunson, Suzanne Winckler, Michael Koop, Wayne Gudmundson

The art of an exceptional photographer captures the artistry of the builder in these images of Finnish-American farmsteads built around the turn of the century in northern Minnesota. Wayne Gudmundson's photographs are marked by the same clarity and simplicity as the traditionally crafted log structures they record. The buildings are compelling testaments in wood to the Finnish heritage and the stalwart, stubborn spirit of the Embarrass community.

Picturing Minnesota, 1936-1943: Photographs from the Farm Security Administration
by Robert L. Reid (Editor)

In the middle of the Great Depression, photographers working for Franklin D. Roosevelt's Farm Security Administration (FSA) began traveling across America taking pictures of ordinary people and places. Catherine Opie: Skyways and Icehouses
by Catherine Opie, Douglas Fogle (Introduction)

Since the late 1980s, Catherine Opie's interest in the motif of the visual road trip has resulted in photographs that sumultaneously document and question the self-constructed identities of the people and places that characterize America. From the freeways of Los Angeles to the downtown of St. Louis and the Wall Street district of New York, Opie now turns her camera to the skyways and icehouses of the Twin Cities. The culmination of a year-long commission from the Walker Art Center, Skyways and Icehouses provides a meditative portrait of a locale, at once a straight-forward documentation and an inquiring social psycho-geography, an exploration of those symbolic architectures often taken for granted. Personal anecdotes, memories, and stories fron Minnesota residents animate Opie's haunting landscapes.
