Baltimore Then & Now by Alexander D., IV MitchellBaltimore, sometimes referred to as Charm City, has a long and fascinating history. In this book history changes before the reader's eyes. From its founding in the early 1700s and its incorporation in 1797, Baltimore has been a major port city, full of life and bustle. According to the National Anthem, "our flag was still there" during a battle of the War of 1812, and indeed, the star-spangled banner still flies over Fort McHenry, where the battle occurred. The life and bustle remains at waterside, but instead of clipper ships or steamboats carrying passengers and cargo, tourists now flock to such sights as the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Fort McHenry, the National Aquarium, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and Federal Hill. All these places and more are featured in this book.

A Day on the Bay: Postcard Views of the Chesapeake by Bert Smith, Anthea Smith, Jacques KellyA companion to the postcards books "Greetings from Baltimore" and "Down the Ocean", this volume seeks to capture the colour and charm of Chesapeake beach resorts, the legendary steamships that served them, and the beauty and recreation that give the "Land of Pleasant Living" its identity. Here are the "Emma Giles" and the "Bay Belle", generations apart, steaming to Tolchester and Betterton beaches; the elegant City of Norfolk departing from Baltimore harbour for the overnight trip to Newport News; sailboats plying the waters of the lower Bay, midshipmen parading in Annapolis, and amusement piers at Chesapeake Beach and Ocean View teeming with revellers. Accompanied by Bert and Anthea Smith's account of Chesapeake life and lore, the postcards document places and experiences that have all but faded into history yet remain fond and vivid memories for generations of residents and visitors. As in the previous books, the Smiths have chosen postcards for aesthetic as well as historic interest. Some are individually hand coloured, and many display photographic tricks or unique design elements.

Baltimore Portraits by Amos Badertscher, Tyler Curtain (Introduction) Baltimore Portraits is a unique presentation of photographs by Amos Badertscher. These portraits-many accompanied by poignantly revealing, hand-written narratives about their subjects-represent a sector of Baltimore that has gone largely unnoticed and rarely has been documented. In this volume, the assemblage of images of bar and street people-transvestites, strippers, drug addicts, drag queens, and hustlers-spans a twenty-year period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. Badertscher's arresting and melancholy photographs document a culture that has virtually disappeared due to substance abuse, AIDS, and, often, societal or familial neglect. An introduction by Tyler Curtain contextualizes the photographs both within the history of Baltimore and its queer subculture and in relationship to contemporaneous work by photographers Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, Duane Michaels, and others. Curtain also positions the underlying concerns of Bardertscher's art in relation to gay and lesbian cultural politics.

Finding the Charm in Charm City: Affectionate Views of Baltimore by Huguette D. May (Photographer), Anthea Smith From the Bel-Loc Diner to the Arbutus Poodle Salon and the now-vacant Pikes Theater, this volume presents photographs of a Baltimore in the midst of change, but one whose past can still be found. Each landmark represents a history of the city and its people, with human stories and historical detail. The photographs show marble steps and rowhouses, car dealers and corner shops, murals, pubs and warehouses. Every subject is visible from the street and May and Smith have arranged the work around 14 of the city's most inviting corridors, from South Hanover Street and Ritchie Highway to Washington Boulevard and Wilkens Avenue; from Reisterstown, Falls and York Roads to Eastern Avenue, Harford and Belair Roads. Using the Polaroid image transfer technique, May individually printed more than 100 colour pictures to capture the variety of interesting building exteriors, design details and quirky sights she found around Baltimore. The process (fully explained in the text) creates colour images of warmth and vitality. Accompanying the photographs, Smith's descriptions blend human stories with historical detail, delving into the city's past to present Baltimore personalities such as Albert Knight, who invented Formstone in 1937, and William Anton Octavek, who started the city's folk art tradition of painted screens in 1914.
