Cuasimodo by Juan Meza-LopehandiaFor more than 10 years Juan Meza-Lopehandia has taken pictures of the colorful traditional religious procession of Cuasimodo in Chile. He has captured with profound sensibility the color, movement and symbolism of this popular feast. The work includes 131 photographs and a historical study of this old tradition made by historian M. Piedad Alliende. The photographs were also exhibited in an individual exposition at the National Museum of Arts in Santiago, Chile. The artistic quality of the book makes it appealing to persons interested in photography and art in general. Nevertheless, it has been very attractive to the public interested in popular Latin American traditions or religious culture. The Cuasimodo procession is one of the most important popular religious feasts in Chile. It takes place the Sunday after Easter in the rural regions near Santiago. A multitudinous crowd of cowboys, carts and bikes dressed in colorful costumes accompany the priest who administers Holy Communion to the sick and injured in their homes. The procession comes from and old tradition where originally the cowboys escorted the priest to protect him from bandits.
