Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players
by David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth

Texas Hold ’em is not an easy game to play well. To become an expert you must balance many concepts, some of which occasionally contradict each other. In 1988, the first edition appeared. Many ideas, which were only known to a small, select group of players, were made available to anyone who was striving to become an expert, and the hold ’em explosion had begun. It is now a new century, and the authors have again moved the state of the art forward by adding over 100 pages of new material, including extensive sections on "loose games," and "short-handed games." Anyone who studies this text, is well disciplined, and gets the proper experience should become a significant winner. Some of the other ideas discussed include play on the first two cards, semi-bluffing, the free card, inducing bluffs, staying with a draw, playing when a pair flops, playing trash hands, desperation bets, playing in wild games, reading hands, and psychology.

by Lee Jones

Since its first publication in 1994, Winning Low-Limit Hold'em, by Lee Jones, has become the major reference on playing Texas Hold'em at the lower limits. However, poker has changed over the several years and Lee has continued to study the game. The result is this revised and expanded second edition.

If you play low-limit Hold’em, or would like to learn to play Hold’em, this book is for you. It won’t teach you a lot of advanced poker theory, but it will give you a solid foundation with which you can be a winner at low-limit Hold’em. Read this book, study it carefully, and be disciplined: you’ll be able to beat any 1-4, 3-6, or 1-4-8-8 Hold’em game you join.

Hold 'Em Poker
by David Sklansky

This text is must reading for anyone planning to play hold’em. It was the first definitive work on hold’em poker and was originally published in 1976. Yet, it is still one of the most important and best selling poker books available.

The text is designed for someone relatively new to the game, but it also contains much sophisticated material which all players should find beneficial. It is probably best known for the Sklansky Hand Rankings, which made the game much simpler to quantify and understand. Some of the topics include how Texas hold’em is played, the importance of position, the first two cards, the key "flops," strategy before the flop, semi-bluffing, the free card, slowplaying, check raising, head-up on fifth street, and how to read hands. Not only was this text, which is Sklansky’s first work, a major contributor to the explosive growth of this game, it is also a book that should still be read by all serious players.

by Lou Krieger, Kathleen Keller Watterson

Playing Internet poker in real time against real opponents might just represent poker's brave new world. It's a world where you can find a game day or night. Though it may be the wee hours of the morning in California, it's prime time in Europe, and someone, somewhere, is looking to play a little poker. But it's poker with a difference. The game is the same, to be sure, but technology does kick in -- sometimes in strange and unexpected ways. A reference as well as a tutorial, this book includes a CD with free poker software, and a special bonus chapter with 125 interactive hands to help you prepare to play the Internet games for fun or for profit.

Some of the ideas discussed in the Omaha eight-or-better section include general concepts, position, low hands, high hands, your starting hand, how to play your hand, play on the flop, multiway versus short handed play, scare cards, getting counterfeited, and your playing style.

Poker: Bets, Bluffs, and Bad Beats
by A. Alvarez, Kelly Duane (Photographer)

A smoke-filled room. The clink of chips breaking the silence of furious concentration. The occasional muttering of "check," "raise," and "fold," as staggering amounts are wagered on a simple hand of five cards. In this fascinating book, acclaimed writer A. Alvarez narrates the history of poker--its most amazing stories, unforgettable players, and incredible hands. From the first great Las Vegas poker marathon, in which Nick the Greek played Johnny Moss for five months straight, to the more recent World Series of Poker, Alvarez captures a subculture rich with legend. His lively text is combined with a colorful array of poker-inspired art, advertisements, movie stills, and photos to create an entertaining ode to the pastime that is not so much a game of cards as a way of life.
