Under the direction of their marabout, almudos will copy a verse of the Koran in Arabic onto these wooden tablets. They will then chant the verse until they have it memorized perfectly. Then they will wash the verse off and copy another and continue this process until they have learned the entire Koran. This will take several years at least.
