Customer Review: Very useful!, November 17, 2001
Reviewer: Jeroen Benda from Culemborg, Netherlands
I bought this book to get a little understanding of the Tibetan language. I got more than I expected. The phrasebook not only contains the most common phrases, but also a quick overview of the grammar and the alphabet. Since most of the Tibetans don't speak any English (expect cheapy cheapy and last price) I found this book very useful (and the Tibetans who saw me use it thought it was very amusing). In short, it's definitely worth the $

The New Tibetan-English Dictionary of Modern Tibetan  $49.95
The New Tibetan-English Dictionary of Modern Tibetan surpasses existing dictionaries in both scope and comprehensiveness. Containing more than 80,000 lexical items used in political, social, economic, literary, and scientific discourse, this invaluable sourcebook includes the tens of thousands of new words that have been coined or that have come into use since Tibet was incorporated into the People's Republic of China in 1951. The dictionary lists lexical items characteristic of the special written genre that was used by Tibetan government officials up to 1959 as well as new terminology used in the Tibetan exile communities in South Asia. It contains both the core lexical terminology used in everyday life and standard modern writing and many proverbs and sayings that appear frequently in contemporary literary materials. The entries provide spoken pronunciation and thousands of illustrative sentences.

Reader Review: Wonderful book, April 4, 2001
Reviewer: Harry Rader from New York, USA
I first read a glowing review of this book from Columbia University and decided to buy it. It's a wonderful book in its own right and especially good when you purchase the accompanying tapes. I used the book when I was in Nepal with great success, and imagine my surprise when I saw many Tibetans with the same book! They told me it helped them to learn English. By far better than the confusing Goldstein alternative (lonely planet), I thank the authors for filling a gap with such a worthy product.
