Lonely Planet Thai Phrasebook (4th Ed)  $6.95
HELPFUL, December 8, 2002
Reviewer: Luis Daniel Lizama Rodríguez from Merida, Yucatan Mexico
This phrase-book was very helpful in my last travel to thailand. I kept it always in my pocket and thanks to the thai writings, you can just point the word and the friendly locals teach you how to pronunciate it properly. I gave this book MANY uses, even in the most unexpected situations. USEFUL!

The Rough Guide Dictionary Phrasebook Thai (Rough Guide Phrasebooks)  $6.50
Power in your pocket, September 18, 2001
Reviewer: Veli-Pekka Ikonen from Finland
I am about to travel to Thailand 5th time and I have found this book useful in most everyday situations. Explanations of Thai speech and writing are good and easy to follow. English-Thai section is brilliant for its size and Thai-English is useful after getting basics straight. Translating Thai text to English is bit labour intensive.

Lonely Planet Travel Talk Thai: A Three-In-One Survival Kit [ABRIDGED]  $11.17
Quite good for travel purposes, February 8, 2002
Reviewer: Ellen Beldner from San Francisco, CA United States
Note: when they say "Lonely Planet Travel Talk Thai", that means that the box includes the language tape AND the Lonely Planet Thai Phrasebook ... The tape itself is very basic -- gives you useful words and phrases. It doesn't really explain anything about the structure or grammar of the language, particularly gendered words and conveying politeness (which are covered in the Lonely Planet book, assuming you read it). But it does get you used to Thai pronunciation & intonations, which is invaluable.

Easy Thai: An Introduction to the Thai Language  $10.36
Time-tested, still in print..., November 4, 2001
Reviewer: chris graham from FPO, AP United States
Without a doubt, easy. One of those you can pick up for 5-10 minutes a day and always feel that you are getting somewhere with this difficult language. Thirty years after picking up this book in a military PX, I'm confident that I couldn't have gotten a better start. Some of the words you get are difficult for a beginner to work into a conversation and it will disappoint anyone who expects to understand casual conversation in Bangkok after finishing just this book, but you will have a serious start on a long journey. He gives you reading from the beginning. Get some tapes from another source or someone to pronounce the vowels for you and you are good to go.

Thai: Basic Course  $41.50
This course was originally designed by the Fo reign Service Institute. This is the best edition available with well done cassettes packaged in handy binders. The Thai Basic Course teaches the national spoken language in the dialect of educated speakers of Bangkok and Central Thailand. It starts with a programmed introduction to Thai phonology to acquaint you with the significant features of the language's sound system. The course then teaches the basic conversations, vocabulary, and grammar you will need to communicate in Thai. When writing, the Thais use a complex system based on Sanskrit, but in the course a special phonetic transcription is used which will help you read and write more easily.

Thai-English English-Thai Dictionary for Non-Thai Speakers, Revised Editio  $15.00
This practical dictionary is designed to help English speakers communicate in Thai. It is equally useful for those who can read the Thai alphabet and those who can't. Most Thai-English dictionaries either use Thai script exclusively for the Thai entries (making them difficult for westerners to use) or use only phonetic transliteration (making it impossible to look up a word in Thai script). This dictionary solves these problems by dividing the entries into three sections: Section One [English-Phonetic-Thai], Section Two [Phonetic-Thai-English] and Section Three [Thai-Phonetic-English]. The transliteration system is the same as that used in Paiboon Publishing's other books. You will find most of the vocabulary you are likely to need in everyday life, including basic medical, cultural, political and scientific terms.
