This is a splendid film that reminded me once again that film can take a very simple story and make it into a powerful experience. No complex plot or mind-bending special effects here - just a good story well told. Child actresses Evelyn Sampi, Tianna Sansbury and Laura Monaghan turn in understated and moving performances and credit the deft direction of Philip Noyce.

What happens in this film? Three young mixed blood aboriginal girls from the north of Australia are forcibly removed from their family and transported 1,500 miles south to a camp where they will be re-educated in order to be assimilated, as maids or domestic help. Determined to return to their family, the three girls escape and head home, using a rabbit-proof fence that spans the continent to guide them over the trackless outback. Based on true events, it provides a very satisfying denouement to see the actual young girls (now elderly ladies) at the close of the film.

Beautifully photographed and impeccably acted, Rabbit-Proof Fence is a film that, without sentimentality, will nonetheless touch your heart. Watch it - you won't be disappointed.
