Brazilian Portuguese in your spare time!, February 15, 2000

While living in Spain, I made some amazing friends who lived in Brazil. When I came home I decided to learn "Brazilian" Portuguese. This set up is excellent, with great choreography between the book and the tapes. The first few chapters are simply vowel sounding, boring yet essential to properly speaking this beautiful language. The following segments build on what you have learned, with little dialogs that first let you repeat after them and then play again so that you can hear how the sentences really sound at real life speeds. It's also a 12 tape set, which really brings you very near fluency, although there is no substitute for immersion. The only fault I can find with this might be overall vocabulary, you might want to buy a supplimental book, although it's by no mean necessary. With a knowledge of Spanish, this is very easy flowing, but it is so well done with it's foundations that non-spanish speakers with have no trouble as well, I was speaking basic Portuguese (barely enough to get by in Brazil) in 2 weeks.

I purchased this book, and found it helpful for exactly the purpose I intended: to pick up more vocabulary. It is a good way to associate the words with the items, not having to necessarily use English as a crutch. If you must see the English, it's there, but as a teacher of foreign languages, I find it much better to associate the new word with the item bypassing any translation. If you are new or fairly new to Portuguese, and you want some common words, this is your book.

This book is probably the most valuable reference that a student of Portuguese can have. Whether going to Brasil, Portugal, or any of the Portuguese speaking African countries, this book should go with you. This book is exellent for the absolute beginner. It is well organized, and gives the learner just the right information to get by in Portuguese. The vocabulary stickers make learning new words a snap, as you are constantly reminded of them as you go about your day. This book also includes very helpful pronounciation reminders above all the words, which speeds the process as well. Finally, the cut-out dining guides, flash cards, and important phrases are the ultimate companions to the traveler. A must have for those with little time to spare.

Using short and easy sentences, this phrasebook reflects everyday speech. There are practical tips and the phrases have a simple guide to help with pronunciation. The 4-colour layout allows easy access to key information. Food guides describe the different regional dishes and wines. They also contain a comprehensive menu reader to guide you through the maze of menus.

I was on an interrail and bought many of these LP phrasebooks and I must say they helped me out. They have phrases that you don't learn if you take a beginner's course in Portugese or any other language. They also have some interesting facts printed inside little boxes, they are fun to read. Although I don't know whether these phrasebooks are suitable for the complete beginner, because....well, when you ask someone "What kind of art you interested in?", I don't think you will understand the answer if you haven't studied any Portugese prior to your trip. But it's great for brushing up your skills and it really helped me on my trip to Portugal.

The book is very easy to use with excellent content. It is arranged by topic in color-coded sections. It has useful commentary and hints like you might find in a travel book. The dictionaries are minimal - only 44 pages for both. If you want to look up Portuguese words you'll need a separate dictionary.
