A Handbook of Common Japanese Phrases  $15.40
Words don't exist as independent units, to be inserted into grammatical slots by a speaker exercising absolute authority over their placement. Rather, they tend to come in neatly bound packages -- in fixed phrases or entire sentences -- ready to communicate an idea that cannot be expressed economically in any other way. For example, "I wouldn't do that if I were you" is basically a set expression, allowing for little change. If a student of English wanted to express the thought behind this phrase, but wasn't aware that a means of doing it already existed, he or she would be forced to resort to a great deal of circumlocution before the point was made.

This is exactly why common phrases are so important: they facilitate communication. Japanese, too, is rich in common phrases perfect for any number and variety of occasions. This handbook lists some 600 of them and explains when, where, and how to use them, providing alternatives for slightly varied circumstances and revealing their underlying psychology. While all this is done in an informative, practical manner, the book is also immensely entertaining and can be profitably read by anyone interested in Japanese etiquette and psychology. All in all, A Handbook of Common Japanese Phrases is a delight for students of Japanese at every level and anyone interested in how Japanese interact among themselves.

A Handbook of Common Japanese Phrases is based on Common Japanese Phrases and Common Japanese Business Phrases, previously published in the Power Japanese series.

Japanese for Busy People (Volume 1)  $17.50
In the ten years since its publication, Japanese for Busy People has won acceptance worldwide as an effective, easy-to-understand textbook, either for classroom use or for independent study. In this new edition, numerous revisions and additions have been made, taking into account the comments and responses of both students and teachers who have been using the course.

In Book I, the revisions are directed at making the grammatical explanations easier to understand, while adding further explanations of points that students have difficulty with. Changes have also been made in favor of more natural practice sentences and dialogues. In addition, new appendices list the particles, interrogatives, and sentence patterns in the book, as well as the kanji introduced.

More fundamental revisions have been made to Book II, which has been expanded and divided into two volumes, Book II and Book Ill. The changes result in a smoother transition from Book I, make new grammatical elements clearer, and present more natural practice dialogues and exercise sentences. This concise course in natural Japanese is ideal for such students as businessmen whose aim is a working knowledge of the spoken language in everyday life. "Survival Japanese for Adults," as it might be called, gets to the heart of the language without recourse to childish or classroom-only Japanese.

Vocabulary and grammar have been limited to about one-third that usually encountered in beginner courses, and words and patterns that students will find immediately useful are emphasized. The thirty lessons are composed of dialogues, notes on grammar, and vocabulary, exercises and quizzes. In addition to developing verbal fluency, by the time the student is one-third the way through Book I he will have mastered the two phonetic syllabaries of Japanese.

Japanese in 10 Minutes a DayŽ  $17.95
Excellent Book, August 9, 2001
Reviewer: Paul from Elk River, MN USA
I have now completed four books in this series and in this one Japanese book, have learned more than I have learned in several computer programs. These books are great, they start out with very simple words such as "Where" or "Who". Then by the end of the book the reader should have the ability to translate complicated sentences. Going through the whole book took me about a month and a half, and I was able to travel to Japan, get to my hotel, book a reservation, eat out at a restaurant, ask for directions, utilize the subway and train system, and much more. I was thouroughly impressed by this book. Unlike most learning material I purchased, this book doesn't make you memorize necessary sentences, but teaches you basic words, and grammar, so you can build sentences. I was even suprised how they mixed in some culture which makes each book unique. I recommend this book to absolutely anyone, erspecially those with no previous Japanese experience.
