Goswami/Gorn
Two serene performances in the "old world India" style. In the mysterious unfolding of Rag Marwa, the great Bansuri master Gour Goswami evokes the essence of twilight and dusk. Steven Gorn, his American disciple renowned for both his solo work and for his work with Glen Velez, concludes the recording with his rendition of the late night Rag Jog, illustrating the transmission from guru to disciple of this timeless musical tradition. Tabla accompaniment is provided by Samir Mazumder and Ray Spiegel. Digitally re mastered under the direction of Steven Gorn.

Ravi Shankar
This 1960s classic is a perfect introduction not only to Ravi Shankar's brilliant work on the sitar, but also to classical Indian music in general. Shankar offers brief, informative explanations of Indian ragas, scales, rhythms, song structures, and time signatures to set the stage for each spiritual piece he, Chatur Lal (tabla), and N.C. Mullick (tamboura) perform. Though Western listeners may not be able intellectually to pinpoint the subtle purposes of the various ragas' rhythms and movements, unconsciously listeners will feel them vividly. For instance, the plodding tension created by the 2/3/2/3 rhythm in "Máru-Bihág" well reflects the raga's poetic metaphor of separated, longing lovers. The loose, playful improvisation on "Sindhi-Bhairavi" mirrors the passionate romance of lovers. Overall, classical Indian music is diverse and complex, but The Sounds of India simplifies it beautifully for those interested in exploring it and its greatest ambassador. --Karen Karleski

The World (Rykodisc/Mickey Hart Series), Ustad Sultan Khan
In November 1974, George Harrison and Ravi Shankar collaborated with some of the greatest Indian musicians of this century on an American concert tour. During their stay in San Francisco, the Indian performers were invited to do an informal concert at The Stone House, a granite room in Fairfax, California. This recording is a document of that event, featuring Ustad Sultan Khan on sarangi. The sarangi is a bowed, stringed instrument with a highly vocal sound and a limited number of able masters.
